We've got all the juicy details below, so grab your sunglasses and let's dive right in!
A History of Labor Day
The modern concept of Labor Day was born out of the trade union and labor movements that emerged in the late 19th century. In the United States, a September holiday called Labor Day was first proposed in the early 1880s. But who can claim to be the true "father" of this special day?
Descendants of two men with similar last names have made competing claims for their great-grandfathers being the originators of Labor Day. According to one account, Peter J. McGuire, a vice president of the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (a predecessor of the American Federation of Labor), came up with the idea after visiting Toronto in May 1882.
In fact, McGuire's proposition for a "general holiday for the laboring classes" was made to the Central Labor Union in New York City on May 8, 1882. And in 1909, the American Federation of Labor convention designated the Sunday preceding Labor Day as 'Labor Sunday', dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day an official public holiday in 1887. By 1894, thirty U.S. states were celebrating Labor Day, and Congress passed a bill recognizing the first Monday of September as Labor Day – which was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland on June 28th of that year.
But what about today? As we celebrate this special day with our favorite celebrities, we're also reminded of the significance behind Labor Day. Many school districts resume classes around this time, marking the end of summer break. In U.S. sports, Labor Day weekend marks the beginning of many fall sports – including the National Football League's kickoff game.
And in the fashion world? Well, it was once considered acceptable to wear white or seersucker up until Labor Day, thanks to the migration of wealthy New Yorkers back from their summer homes. Today, we see a mix of both beachy and stylish outfits from our favorite stars – but one thing's for sure: these A-listers know how to make a splash!
