Britney Spears' Biopic in Limbo: Hollywood Stunned by 'Erratic' Behavior
BRITNEY SPEARS' HOLLYWOOD BIOPIC IN SHAMBLES: DIRECTOR JON M. CHU'S SCHEDULE TOO HEATED, BRITNEY'S "ERRATIC" BEHAVIOR THE MAIN OBSTACLE
It's been two years since Britney Spears dropped her bombshell memoir, The Woman in Me, sending shockwaves through the entertainment industry and sparking a heated bidding war over the rights to adapt it into a Hollywood movie. But now, insiders claim that production on the highly anticipated biopic has stalled – or rather, barely begun.
Universal Studios ultimately won out in August last year, buying the rights to produce the first authorized film about the 43-year-old pop icon, with Wicked director Jon M. Chu at the helm. However, an inside source has revealed exclusively to The Scholarly Note that progress on the project is grinding to a halt due to Chu's packed schedule and Spears' increasingly erratic behavior.
"Production hasn't moved forward as expected," the insider spilled. "There's no script, and casting hasn't even been considered because nobody has hired a casting department yet." The source added that several key team members are busy with other projects, further hindering progress on the film.
When we reached out to Spears' representatives for comment, they declined to address the rumors surrounding the stalled production. However, an insider claims that Spears is "too difficult" to work with, and her "erratic behavior" has made it challenging to schedule meetings or even discuss the project.
Spears confirmed on social media in August 2024 that she was collaborating with Hollywood producer Marc Platt – whose credits include the Legally Blonde franchise and both Wicked films – to turn her bestselling memoir into a biopic. Fans immediately went into overdrive, speculating about who should play Spears in the film. Some of the most popular suggestions included Sabrina Carpenter, Addison Rae, Sydney Sweeney, Mia Marcuzzi, Kylie Schultz, and even Stranger Things star Milly Bobby Brown.
In fact, Brown revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she would "love nothing more than" to portray Spears in the biopic. However, another insider claims that Spears is not impressed with Brown's interest, labeling her as "too desperate" for the role. It seems Spears will have final say over who gets to play her in the film – and it won't be a decision made lightly.
Despite the challenges facing the project, The Scholarly Note has learned that Chu plans to involve Spears heavily in developing the storyboard for the film. However, this may prove to be a Herculean task given her current mental health struggles. "One of the biggest issues is getting Britney to commit to meetings," the insider revealed. "It's like trying to pin down a cat – you never know when she'll just disappear."
As Spears' social media antics continue to raise eyebrows, fans are left wondering what's behind her increasingly erratic behavior. Recent posts have seen her dancing with knives, claiming to have burned down her bathroom, and ranting about "fake friends." She sparked concerns over a mental health crisis in May last year when photos emerged of her being escorted out of the Chateau Marmont hotel while barefoot and wrapped in a blanket.
Spears' family is reportedly "worried" about her well-being, with one insider describing her living situation as a "messy mansion." Another source claimed that Spears' house is "unlivable," with piles of dirty laundry, broken appliances, and even dog feces scattered everywhere. Family members are said to be "terrified for her future," citing her ongoing mental health struggles.
As the months tick by, fans can only hope that Spears will find a way to overcome her personal demons and allow production on the biopic to move forward. Will Britney's Hollywood story finally get told? Only time (and her own well-being) will tell.
