Bill Maher's Controversial Halloween Costume Resurfaces: 'Human Garbage' Label Ignites Debate

Bill Maher dressed up as a dead Steve Irwin just weeks after his death in 2006

BILL MAHER'S CRINGEWORTHY CROCODILE HUNTER COSTUME RESURFACES, LEAVING FANS GAGGING IN HORROR

In a move that's left many scratching their heads, talk show host Bill Maher's infamous Halloween costume from almost two decades ago has resurfaced on Reddit, sparking outrage and shock among fans. And let's be real, it's not exactly the kind of attention anyone wants – especially considering the circumstances.

Back in 2006, just weeks after the tragic death of beloved conservationist Steve Irwin, Maher donned a rather...disturbing costume. The 69-year-old talk show host, known for his sharp wit and sarcasm, opted to dress up as the Crocodile Hunter with a bloody stingray barb sticking out of his chest. Yes, you read that right – a bloody stingray barb! It was all in good fun, or so he thought.

Irwin was killed aged 44 when he was barbed by a stingray on September 4, 2006

The cringe-worthy costume featured Maher sporting a ginger wig and a khaki button-down shirt with a massive blood splatter on the chest. The pièce de résistance? A stingray barb sticking out of the center of the "wound." One can only imagine the conversations around the dinner table when this ensemble was revealed.

At the time, Maher defended his questionable fashion choice on his talk show, saying: 'Stop hassling me about my Halloween costume. Yes, you've seen it on the internet. I went as the Crocodile Hunter with a bloody stinger in my chest. People who really love animals understand if you get killed by one, chances are you were doing something to it you shouldn't have been.'

And then, he threw some shade at former presidential candidate John Kerry, saying: 'You want me to apologize for making a joke? Who do you think I am, John Kerry?' Ouch! It seems Maher's wit didn't quite extend to his taste in Halloween costumes.

The beloved conservationist was pierced in the heart by the stingray

Fast forward to the present day, and it appears fans are still reeling from the resurrection of this infamous costume on Reddit. Commenters were quick to express their outrage, with one user exclaiming: 'Gross, why are celebrities so obsessed with each other dying gruesomely?' Another added: 'What a piece of human garbage Maher is.' A third commenter shared their personal connection to Irwin, stating: 'I grew up admiring Steve Irwin. I get teared up viewing his content now. I have even more reason to dislike Bill Maher.'

For those who may not be familiar with the circumstances surrounding Irwin's tragic death, it's worth noting that he was killed when a stingray barb pierced his chest during an underwater filming expedition on September 4, 2006. The environmental icon was just 44 years old at the time of his passing.

And Maher isn't the only celebrity to face backlash for their Halloween costumes. Earlier this week, actress Chloe Sevigny sparked outrage after her costume of a dead Princess Diana resurfaced online. In 1999, two years after Princess Diana's death, Sevigny donned a rather tasteless costume at a bash hosted by model Kirsty Hume and actor Donovan Leitch in New York City.

Irwin is survived by his wife, Terri Irwin, and their two children, Bindi (pictured) and Robert

For the costume, Sevigny wore a camel-colored blazer with the words 'Die Di' embroidered on the lapel. One can only imagine the conversations around the watercooler when this ensemble was revealed. It's clear that both Maher and Sevigny took their Halloween costumes a bit too far – but hey, at least we have something to talk about!
