Beyond the Salacious Story: Jodie Sweetin's Journey to Sobriety
Jodie Sweetin Spills the Tea on Her Shocking Drug Addiction Struggle After Full House Fame
TheScholarlyNote.com has learned that Jodie Sweetin, the beloved actress behind Stephanie Tanner in the iconic sitcom Full House and its Netflix reboot Fuller House, has opened up about her dark past with drug addiction. In a jaw-dropping revelation, Sweetin revealed that after the show ended, she turned to booze as a coping mechanism for boredom and loneliness – but things took a serious turn when she started abusing cocaine, crystal meth, and ecstasy.
The 43-year-old mother of two made the shocking confession during an appearance on Kaitlyn Lowry's podcast Barely Famous, where she dished about her struggles with addiction and recovery. Sweetin, who is best known for her iconic red hair and precocious portrayal of Stephanie Tanner, revealed that despite the fact that millions of people battle addiction, it was even more challenging for her due to her fame.
"I always say, I would have struggled with addiction issues regardless of being on TV or not," she candidly admitted. "And to be fair, that gave me some of the ability to be able to find treatment and find help in ways that I might not have had I not worked as a child. But it's very hard [when] you have to make all your mistakes publicly."
Sweetin's road to sobriety was far from smooth sailing. She relapsed several times, including after getting sober initially, and even after having kids. "I had gone to treatment in my 20s, and then I had kids, and then I got sober, and then I drank again and then I got sober," she explained. "It's been up and down, but it's been 16 years since I've drank alcohol and 13 years since I relapsed on meds with a car accident that I was in."
The star confessed that pills were never her thing, but after a car accident left her with a muscle relaxant prescription, she found herself slipping back into old habits. However, after hitting rock bottom once again, Sweetin picked herself up and dusted herself off – determined to reclaim her life and her career.
Fans will get to hear Jodie tell her story in her own voice when her memoir unSweetined is released as an audiobook later this year. The book, first published in 2009, recounts Sweetin's journey from child stardom to addiction and recovery. In the new introduction, the Fuller House star shares even more intimate details about her struggles with drug abuse.
"It was really vulnerable to revisit these stories in my own voice all these years later," she revealed in a statement to TheScholarlyNote.com. "I hope listeners feel that connection with every word."
TheScholarlyNote.com has learned that Sweetin's new audiobook will feature the actress sharing her raw emotions and honest thoughts about her journey, making it an unmissable listen for fans of the beloved sitcom.
