Benny Blanco's Brain: 'Just Like a 15-Year-Old Girl'!
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Benny Blanco Spills on His Secret Music Formula and Reveals His Spirituality Secrets
In a candid conversation with Harper's Bazaar, record-producing mastermind Benny Blanco has revealed the shocking truth about his music-making process. The 37-year-old producer, who is engaged to pop sensation Selena Gomez, let slip that his musical tastes are eerily similar to those of a 15-year-old girl.
"I feel like my mind and a 15-year-old girl's mind are very similar in what we like, musically," Blanco confessed to the magazine. "I've just always been drawn to having fun and making stuff that makes me feel good. If it winds up being something that other people like, then that's cool to me."
But don't be fooled – Blanco's carefree approach to music production has paid off in a big way. He's worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber, producing hits like Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and Kesha's "TiK ToK."
"I had no idea my career was gonna be what it was gonna be," Blanco admitted, chuckling at his own good fortune. "When we were making 'Teenage Dream' with Katy, we didn't know it was gonna be this iconic song people are gonna talk about forever. We were just making a song and having fun and getting drunk – it's not rocket science."
But what drives Blanco's creative process? According to him, it's all about tapping into his spiritual side. The producer revealed that he often turns to crystals and other "woo-woo" practices to support his work.
"I'm like woo-woo, put patchouli all over me and stick a rabbit's foot up my butt," Blanco joked. "I'm totally down to go on that journey... I believe in fate, karma, energy."
This year, Blanco has been busy working on an album with his fiancée, Selena Gomez. The album, titled "I Said I Love You First," debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and moved a respectable 120,000 copies in its first week.
But it seems that Gomez is itching to revisit some of her earlier work – particularly her hit single "Who Says." In a recent appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, Gomez revealed her desire to re-record the song, which she performed with her band Selena Gomez & The Scene back in 2009 and 2012.
"That's honestly the only reason I would ever do a tour again – to perform 'Who Says'," Gomez confessed. "I need to redo it. I should recut it."
The Only Murders in the Building star went on to explain that she wants to re-record the track because she sounds so young on the original recording. "I would have to take it down an octave from each year I've sang it," she joked.
Will Blanco be lending his producing talents to Gomez's re-recording project? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – with Blanco at the helm, any music project is bound to be a hit.
