Benedict Cumberbatch Calls Out 'Grossly Wasteful' Film Industry Over Set Feasting

Benedict Cumberbatch has slammed the film industry for being 'hugely wasteful' in the amount actors are fed during filming, he told the Ruthie's Table 4 podcast

Benedict Cumberbatch Spills the Tea: Film Industry's Wasteful Ways Exposed!

In a shocking revelation, British heartthrob Benedict Cumberbatch has slammed the film industry for its grossly wasteful practices, revealing the outrageous amount of food actors are fed on set. The 49-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Marvel's Doctor Strange and Sherlock, opened up about the overeating epidemic on Ruthie's Table 4 podcast.

Cumberbatch recounted his own experience on the set of Doctor Strange (2016), where he was forced to consume a whopping five meals a day. The London-born actor revealed that even with a personal chef catering to his needs, the experience was "horrific." He confessed, "What am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I'm eating."

Benedict revealed during filming for Doctor Strange he was forced to eat five meals a day

The husband of Sophie Hunter and father-of-three explained that the industry's focus on calorie counting and protein-rich snacks left him feeling guilty about indulging. "It's like, what am I doing? Eating beyond my appetite is just not something I enjoy," he admitted.

As it turns out, Cumberbatch was far from alone in his struggle with overeating. The actor shared that many of his colleagues on set would also consume copious amounts of food, only to end up feeling sluggish and uncomfortable. He lamented, "It's a grossly wasteful industry... Think about set builds that aren't recycled. Think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy."

When questioned about the root causes of this waste, Cumberbatch emphasized the need for change. "You have someone who can prescribe you what you're eating and they can cook for you," he said. "We had a fantastic chef on the last Doctor Strange film, but it's this amazing facility to go, 'Right, he needs to be on this many calories a day. He needs to have five meals. He needs to have a couple of boiled eggs between those five meals or some kind of high protein snack, cheese and crackers or almond butter and crackers. Crackers. Lots of crackers'."

The Marvel star said overeating felt 'horrific' but it's to help actors hold themselves better and give stamina through the exercise

The esteemed actor's candid confession has sparked outrage among fans, who are calling for the industry to prioritize sustainability and actor well-being. Cumberbatch's words have also resonated with fellow celebrities, including Sir Elton John, Bono, Guillermo Del Toro, Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach, and Sir Ian McKellen – all of whom will be joining Ruthie's Table 4 for forthcoming episodes.
