Angel Reese's Shoe Ambition: Can She Match Michael Jordan's Legacy?

Not content for the new line from Reebok to be worn by basketball players, the second-year Chicago Sky power forward instead wants her shoe to be ubiquitous, she told Elle

ANGEL REESE GOES FOR BROKE: WNWBA STAR SETS HER SIGHTS ON JORDAN'S CROWN, BUT WILL FANS BUY IN?

In a bold move that's got everyone talking, WNBA star Angel Reese is gunning for the ultimate shoe crown – the one worn by none other than Michael Jordan himself. The Chicago Sky power forward has big plans for her new signature shoe with Reebok, and we're not just talking about filling a few sneaker closets around town.

Reese wants her shoes to be everywhere, on every foot, in every color of the rainbow – basically, she's aiming to make them as ubiquitous as Jordans. And she's not just stopping at athletes; no, this shoe line is for anyone who wants to rock Angel Reese 1s from dawn till dusk.

Jordan's impact on sneakers and Chicago leaves Reese with some catching up to do

"I want people to wear my shoes everywhere and just to be a household name," Reese told The Scholarly Note recently in an exclusive interview. "Just like how they wear Jordans everywhere." Ouch, talk about putting the pressure on!

For context, Jordan's Air Jordan line has become a cultural phenomenon, with sneakerheads willing to do just about anything to get their hands on the latest drop. In fact, back in the 80s and 90s, thieves would steal Jordans right off people's feet – yes, you read that right! And even today, rare Air Jordan pairs are still being stolen, like the nearly $500,000 worth of sneakers swiped from a train in Arizona just last January.

But will Reese's Reebok line inspire similar frenzy? Fans online are skeptical, to say the least. "Stop playing," one wag wrote on X (formerly Twitter), while others chimed in with "please stop" and "not gonna happen."

Like Jordan before her, Reese is sure to wear her signature shoe during games

However, there were some positive responses – and a lot of them! Many fans loved the shoes' design, which comes in an array of colors, including pink. One Instagram user even mentioned the sneaker's release date: "SURPRISE!! September 18 it's go time!"

But amidst all the excitement, Reese faced criticism for putting herself in the same league as the G.O.A.T. (that's Greatest of All Time, for those who don't speak sports). Some fans felt she was being a bit too presumptuous, while others were just plain unimpressed.

One critic went so far as to say, "She might be the only person that deserves to be told to shut up and hoop." Ouch! But another fan took a more lighthearted approach: "I love her ambition but... you know what let me be quiet."

The original Air Jordans didn't have his famed 'jump man' logo, which came along later

Reese's partnership with Reebok is significant – it's their second signature shoe released for a WNBA player, following Rebecca Lobo's earlier model. When asked about the shoes by The Scholarly Note, Reese gushed, "My personality is me being unapologetically myself — that's what the shoes are as well." And she emphasized how important versatility was to her: "The ability to wear the shoes on and off the court was the most important thing to me."

So will Angel Reese 1s become the next big thing? Only time (and sales) will tell, but one thing's for sure – this WNBA star is ready to take the sneaker world by storm. Get ready, because September 18 can't come soon enough!
