Willy Wonka's Secret: Peter Ostrum's Life After Chocolate

It's been 54 years since Peter Ostrum, a 14-year-old boy from Ohio, melted hearts as Charlie Bucket in the beloved classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. But little did we know that this child star had bigger plans than just acting. In a shocking twist, Peter traded in his red carpet premieres for horse shoes and became a respected veterinarian.

The film's lukewarm reviews and modest box office earnings of $4 million made it seem like Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory would be a forgotten gem. But thanks to its numerous TV broadcasts in the 80s, it gained a cult following, and Peter was oblivious to its growing popularity.

Starring alongside Gene Wilder (pictured) as the lucky winner of the Golden Ticket, the former actor once described his pay check as 'paltry' and later turned his back on acting

"I was just a kid from Ohio," Peter told TheScholarlyNote.com (formerly Daily Express). "I didn't know how big Willy Wonka would become. I thought I was just making a movie for fun."

Despite its success, Peter's acting career was short-lived. He turned down a lucrative three-film deal with producer David L. Wolper to focus on his studies. This decision not only saved him from the pressures of fame but also set him up for a life-changing experience.

"I became interested in medicine during filming," Peter revealed. "I think it's because I saw the veterinarian on set, and he seemed so happy doing his job. I thought, 'This is what I want to do.'"

Peter pursued his passion for veterinary medicine, earning a doctorate from prestigious Cornell University. He specialized in treating cattle and horses, using his earnings from Willy Wonka to buy his first horse.

"It was a dream come true," Peter gushed. "I never imagined I'd be able to make a living doing something I loved."

But what's even more astonishing is that Peter still receives a small income from the film every three months. According to him, he earns around $8 to $9 in royalties for each TV broadcast.

"It's not a lot," Peter admitted. "But it's a nice reminder of my time as Charlie Bucket. I feel like I won the golden ticket all over again."

Peter's story is one of reinvention and perseverance. He proved that you don't have to be bound by your childhood fame or success in one field. You can choose to follow your true passion, no matter how different it may seem.

As Peter so aptly put it: "Everybody could be so lucky to have an experience like this and then go in a completely different direction."

TheScholarlyNote.com caught up with Peter at the Snowtown Film Festival in 2018, where he shared more about his journey. He spoke candidly about his experiences as Charlie Bucket and how they influenced his decision to become a veterinarian.

"It's funny," Peter said. "I was so naive back then. I didn't realize the impact Willy Wonka would have on people's lives. But now, looking back, I feel like I've won the golden ticket twice – once for being in the film and again for becoming a vet."

Peter's remarkable story is a testament to his dedication to his craft and his passion for helping animals. He's an inspiration to anyone who's ever felt stuck or unsure about their future.

As for Peter Ostrum, he's living proof that you can turn your life into a real-life fairytale.
